For those of you who have been waiting with bated breath for me to recount my Costa Rican experience, I do apologize for the delay. I’ve been home for over a week, but was preoccupied with the commencement of the fall semester. What a reality check! One minute I’m knee-deep in rain forest mud, the next minute I’m hunched against the air conditioner’s polar exhalations, while the sterile fluorescent lighting dilutes my tan. A class room is a great place to learn, but it’s easy to forget that a place needn’t have four walls and a top-of-the-line projector system to qualify as a learning environment.

So, with no further ado, I give you….Costa Rica! There are many, many more pictures on my Flickr, just click the doodad on the right to vacation vicariously through Yours Truly. (more…)

On Monday, I will embark upon a journey that will allow me to cross one more thing off my “Stuff I Want To Do Before I Die” list. I will be traveling to Costa Rica to see/hike in the rain forest, among other things. Such as:

Honestly, what's cuter than a pygmy marmoset? That's right- nothing.

Honestly, what's cuter than a pygmy marmoset? That's right- nothing.

1. Watching (hopefully) some sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs.

2. Taking a soak in volcanic mineral springs (I know, it’s August. I don’t care.)

3. Seeing some monkeys.

Other things I hope to see: Jewel scarab beetles, giant iguanas, boa constrictors, pygmy marmosets (although I think these only live in South America).

Things I hope not to see: The U.S. embassy (because this would probably mean something bad had happened), the deadly fer-de-lance snake, any mosquitoes carrying Dengue fever.

I’ve been brushing up on my atrophied Spanish, and (attempting) to teach my husband a few handy phrases, too. Does it matter to me that all he can remember how to say is “My wife, you are a very beautiful lady”? Nope. Not at all. For him, that might be the handiest phrase he could know, anyway.

Wish us luck! Pictures will be forthcoming, because I got a badass new camera.

Also, if you’re reading this post because of the marmoset, click here for more marmoset-y goodness.

Imagine my surprise when I found this in the sack of potatoes I was preparing for last night’s supper. I couldn’t resist adding the “balls”.
